Eden Mussels are the only commercial mussel producer in New South Wales, and provide their wonderful shellfish to a number of fish markets and restaurants Australia-wide. Eden’s Twofold Bay is the third deepest in the southern hemisphere, and its pristine waters contain natural mussel spat which attach themselves to the long ropes of the farm and slowly grow into mature table mussels. Locals and tourists can also buy mussels directly from the boat, the Rikara Star, as she enters port every weekday.
Skipper Tony appreciates this direct connection to customers. “They come down to the wharf and buy some live mussels off the boat the day they’re caught. It’s a great way for people to see what we do here, and to get the product at its freshest,” he says. Routine water testing is completed to ensure the mussels are growing in ideal conditions, and the structure of the farm is designed to have minimal impact on the marine environment. This dedication to quality and environment, as well as the ideal marine landscape of Twofold Bay, makes Eden Mussels one of the South Coast’s favourite exports.
