What began as a hobby for Honor Northam quickly became a budding enterprise when she started taking surplus loaves of her fresh sourdough down to a local Bermagui coffee shop. “I’d have a few extra loaves I’d take down to Mister Jones and people started buying them. The more I baked the more they bought,” she says.
Honor’s passion has evolved into what is now Honor Bread – an artisan bakery with a focus on producing high-quality sourdoughs, and keeping their values local. “We sell to many great shops in the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla, mostly whole-food stores, small shops and cafes that have a similar ethos around food and community as we do.”
Their bakery in Bermagui sells their breads to the public and is also their central distribution hub. Honor is also at the Sage farmer’s markets in Moruya every Tuesday afternoon, selling everything from the country loaf, to rye and caraway, fig and walnut and baguettes – all made with organic flour, using classic sourdough starter. Honor also runs bread-making workshops at the bakery, taking every opportunity to support the vibrant South Coast food culture. Her message for people is to “eat seasonally, organic where you can, and support local producers and markets.”
